Tell us what you do at 7digital

I'm a software developer in the Product Engineering team. We develop tools to help internal and external users of the 7digital platform and make their lives easier. The tools help to curate playlists, browse the music catalogue and interrogate how the 7digital platform is being used (API requests, amount of users, etc.)

What is the most exciting project you have been involved in?

Probably the most exciting project I've been involved with is prototyping the Data Console - a tool used to see how the platform is being used. We were able to try out new technologies and work with several different teams in the company to make the data we collect much more accessible.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of the job is the culture within the tech team. We are given a problem to solve and have the freedom to solve it how we see best and we are able to work closely with the Product and UX team in order to make something that the end user wants. We are able to work in an agile way, allowing us to continuously deliver value and improve.

What do you think the future of music looks like?

Well, my first album was a hand-me-down from my sister - I don't think that would happen today! It's always difficult to tell what the future of music will be - I believe it's currently moving towards 'lean-back listening', where playlists are curated for you by experts or using machine learning, and you don't have to think about what you listen to.

Do you have a claim to fame story - if so, what is it?

It's not exactly a claim to fame story but a couple of years ago a group of tourists were really excited to take mine and my family's photo outside of Buckingham Palace while we were waiting to go in - I think they thought we were important guests as we were all dressed up! So we're probably in some random photo album somewhere in the world.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

A typical day starts by having a stand-up with the rest of my team and any stakeholders where we talk about what we did the previous day and what we plan on doing that day. I then pair with someone in the team on the next item to be worked on. If we need to release anything, it only takes a couple of clicks, and less than a minute to release. At lunchtime you can usually find me in the canteen doing a crossword with a group of friends.

Favourite album or song of all time?

That's a tricky one - it depends what mood I'm in! Emeli Sande's 'Read All About It' is something I could always listen to.
